Building the city of the future—that is the shared ambition of Royal Dutch Jaarbeurs and Timmerstad Utrecht. That’s why they’re such a great fit, coming together for the first time this year.
Timmerstad is where elementary school students in grades 6, 7, and 8 design and build an entire city with their own hands at the end of summer vacation. For four days, they’ll be drawing, measuring, sawing, carpenting, and—above all—working together on all kinds of creations. The result is a city that no one could have predicted, with huts of all shapes and sizes, as well as the necessary vehicles they’ve built themselves.
From a small initiative to a new location
Timmerstad Utrecht began in 2023 as a local initiative in Southeast Utrecht, but it has quickly outgrown its original space, and available spots consistently sell out fast. That’s why we started looking for a new venue where the event could continue to grow.
This new location was found at Royal Dutch Jaarbeurs through a partnership with the Construction & Installation cluster, which also organizes BouwBeurs, VSK+E, Future Facade, DigiBouw, and the European Smart City Experience (ESCE). There was a strong willingness there to get children excited about technology and construction. “Timmerstad lets children discover how much fun creating, technology, and working together can be,” says Joyce van de Hoef, cluster manager at Jaarbeurs. “We’re proud to provide this initiative with the space it needs to continue growing.”
Introducing more children to
So this year, the event is moving to Royal Dutch Jaarbeurs, where it will be held in a large indoor courtyard. There, it will have the space to introduce even more children to creating through technology and collaboration. So we set out to find a new location.
The team at Timmerstad is very pleased that the event can expand at its new location. “Interest in Timmerstad grows every year,” says Gijs Mensing of Timmerstad Utrecht. “Thanks to the move to Jaarbeurs , we can reach more children and increase our social impact.”
