Scientific AI and machine learing can help to better understand water and subsoil, argues Hanneke van der Klis of Deltares in this fourth episode of the podcast series Built by AI. She shows how the water sector has been working with data for years and what construction can learn from it.
With Rijkswaterstaat, Deltares is developing an AI model that predicts water levels and wave heights in near real-time. Calculations that used to take five hours are now ready in seconds. But sometimes there is resistance, she points out. "Both on the research and consulting side, you sometimes see that there is a barrier in making the step to data-driven machine learning. Can you trust that?"
She understands this, because there is a lot of knowledge and expertise in the old models, and now suddenly something new is coming from a completely different angle. "With also stories about AI as a black box. You have no idea what you put in and also no idea what comes out. If we keep telling that to each other, it does stay very exciting."
In episode 4 of the podcast series Built by AI, Hanneke explains how AI helps to analyze faster and make better decisions about soil and subsoil. This is exactly where common ground and opportunities exist for the water and construction sectors to work together.

About Built by AI
Built by AI is a seven-part podcast series. In this second season, experts from different fields reflect on how artificial intelligence is helping and can help the design, construction and engineering sectors make a productivity leap. The presentation is in the hands of Guido van Winden (known from 'Keuzecast' & 'AI, your new colleague', among others) and Bart Brink (TKI Bouw en Techniek). Each episode, they will host appealing frontrunners from the sector who will show how AI is already offering them new opportunities today and shaping the future.
