Making buildings more sustainable starts with AI, says Piet Jan Bloem, director of strategy at AIMZ. He already tackled hundreds of buildings that way. "And you know what the great thing is: they believe this lower energy bill. Our customers are especially happy with the improved indoor climate."
Bloem built data centers in a gray past. When he returned to built environments early this century, he didn't know what he saw. According to him, there is still a lot of energy to be saved in buildings by better controlling installations. He uses AI for that purpose and has already tackled hundreds of buildings with his system.
"So often I still see buildings being cooled and heated at the same time." His mission to help make hospitals, theaters, educational buildings and museums more sustainable through smarter design of systems began in 2021 when TNO challenged him to translate his findings into a computer model. Not long after, he founded the company AIMZ.
The technology works like a mechanic watching an installation with a laptop, but continuously (24 hours a day) and enriched by additional data sources such as dynamic energy prices, weather and wind forecasts. In this way, the system really gets to know a building and can optimally control the installations of large buildings, sometimes as many as 500 rooms.
In episode 3 of the podcast series Built by AI, Piet Jan talks about how the AI solution grew from idea to product, and the steps and lessons learned.

About Built by AI
Built by AI is a seven-part podcast series. In this second season, experts from different fields reflect on how artificial intelligence is helping and can help the design, construction and engineering sectors take a productivity leap. The presentation is in the hands of Guido van Winden (known from 'Keuzecast' & 'AI, your new colleague', among others) and Bart Brink (TKI Bouw en Techniek). Each episode, they will host appealing frontrunners from the sector who will show how AI is already offering them new opportunities today and shaping the future.
