At Arcadis, they already had a successful use-case for AI in 2017, so they were able to quickly anticipate when ChatGPT came on the scene. Bram Mommers, former CTO of Arcadis and now Global Director for Health & Safety, Wellbeing, Workplace and Travel talks about how AI gained ground in his organization.
Bram tells how AI took its first steps within Arcadis, when nocturnal animal counts of ecologists were automated with camera images and image recognition. That same technology grew into global applications, such as automatically detecting damage to roads and structures.
The early experience with AI laid the foundation for the next step: ArcadisGPT. An internal, secure AI environment that employees worldwide use for their daily work. It now runs over a million queries a month, and juniors and seniors work together to further improve the model.
Although only a small part of Arcadis is based in the Netherlands, the AI team is located right here. Bram sees the Netherlands leading the way in adoption, but sometimes reluctant to take advantage of opportunities. His appeal: keep weighing risks, but dare to experiment.
